There seems to be a lot of bickering at my work these days. Is it the economy?
It can be. Some areas of employment, such as the public sector (hospitals, social services etc.) are experiencing downsizing and other pressures. This can lead to increase conflict in the workplace. However that does not mean that nothing can be done. Conflict is a natural part of life. Its how you deal with it that matters.
I have had a bad blow-up with one of my supervisors. Should I approach her about it or leave it alone?
In general it is not a good idea to leave it alone. The issue may still be simmering for you or your supervisor. Heres a few tips on talking it through:
- Sort out your feelings, ahead of time, talk to a friend, partner, counselor etc.
- When approaching your supervisor, use I statements, this takes her off the defensive, for example I felt hurt when my work was criticized
- Ask for ideas on how to prevent this the next time, you are looking to make the relationship with your supervisor a positive one
- Show appreciation for the conversation with your supervisor, try and get commitment to continue working on these types of issues
- Sometimes talking with your supervisor is not easy, after all she has the power, but try to see things from her perspective, this may help you get the mutual understanding you need to resolve conflicts.
