Why do we hear so much about wife assault?

It never happened before. Its not new. For example, did you know that, the 1767 English “rule of thumb” allowed men to beat their wives with a whip or stick no wider than his thumb. It has always been a part of our culture. We are just paying more attention to it now.

Why doesn’t the abused woman leave her partner?

There are many reasons. Some hope the relationship will get better. Often she is concerned for the children and stays in the relationship for them. Many times she really has no where else to go.

Is wife assault a crime?

Yes. Criminal charges can be laid. When women use the courts, many report that this has caused a reduction in the incidents of violence. Counselling also helps, both for the women and her partner.
